Accountant arrested in NC for opening fire on MAGA supporter who had Trump sign in yard

A 37-year-old accountant was arrested after he allegedly opened fire at a supporter of the 47th president as the individual was in his yard with a Trump banner. The incident comes after there has been attention drawn to left-wing violence in the aftermath of Charlie Kirk's assassination that took place on September 10.

Benjamin Michael Campbell, 37, has been charged with firing shots at Mark Thomas' home in North Carolina. The incident took place on September 6. Footage of the incident was captured on the home's security cameras. Footage showed the gunman raising the pistol from a sunroof of a vehicle and fired multiple rounds, per the Daily Mail.

The Swain County Sheriff's Office booked Campbell on September 30. He has been charged with Class C felony assault with a deadly weapon, which could land him up to 17 years in prison.

The outlet reported that Campbell is married and employed as an accountant in Cobb County, Atlanta and is about 160 miles from Thomas' home. Thomas said that he saw Campbell coming down the 55 mile an hour road but came to a sudden halt in front of the home. Thomas said that on the security footage he saw the man come out of his Jeep Cherokee with an "Antifa-style mask" and looked over the Trump banner that was hanging from a bus parked on the Thomas' property.

"He was driving along, saw the sign, slammed on his brakes, you know, had a political trigger moment, and he just had to tear the sign down," Thomas said. "He started reaching up on his tippy toes, trying to get to the edge of the sign. I just thought to myself, this is not happening. I don't believe this. I'm a Trump supporter. I have weapons for my protection and my enjoyment and I keep them handy. You know, what good are they if you can't get to them when you need them? So I reached over and grabbed my rifle."

Thomas added that he walked onto the porch and fired off two warning shots in the air as Campbell stood by the sign. "By this point, he had ripped the sign off, and he just whipped it up and then threw it down on the ground. Like he was proud of what he just did. I thought, Holy smokes," Thomas added.

Campbell went to his car but instead of driving off, he circled around and raised the gun through the sunroof, firing off multiple rounds at the home. "He fired five to six rounds as he was heading back down the driveway to the highway that passes in front of my place," Thomas recounted. "I found one bullet hole in my refrigerator, which is on my porch." The Trump supporter added he was on the porch when the suspect shot, missing him by a matter of feet.

The suspect is being held in a North Carolina jail after being extradited from Atlanta and is being held on $70,000 bond.
