Richard Trumka, president of the powerful AFL-CIO labour organization, died unexpectedly from a massive heart attack overnight.
Trumka, 72, represented more than 12.5 million workers for over a decade. AFL-CIO staff were informed of his passing on Thursday morning, according to Politico.
On Wednesday, he sent solidarity to the striking UMWA miners of Alabama by video.
Trumka started his career in the UMWA before ascending to leader of the largest labour federation in the US.
He was a close ally of the Biden administration.
