AG Tish James clashes with Mamdani over socialist candidates who don't understand NYC's race issues

New York State Attorney General Letitia James has clashed with socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani over the candidates he backed that went on to win three Democrat primaries in different House districts. In two of the races, the mayor-endorsed candidates unseated incumbents already in the House of Representatives.

James, who said that other political leaders are also disappointed in Mamdani's endorsements, said, “Some of the candidates that he has supported are individuals who do not understand the politics of New York City, the cultural differences from district to district, who have not been part of the history and the struggle of some of these districts, and are relatively new to the body politic,” per CNN.

She argued that Mamdani has a lack of understanding when it comes to race and class issues that run deep in New York City. “All of us are a little frustrated with the Democratic Party. But you don’t blow it up. That’s what MAGA has done,” James added. She said there were "hurt feelings" with black and brown voters.

The Mamdani-endorsed candidates were Darializa Avila Chevalier, Claire Vladez, and Brad Lander. All won their primaries and are likely to be elected to the House of Representatives in November because of New York's majority Democrat demographic.

In all three of the districts, Mamdani's candidates, backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), were elected with a relatively small voter turnout. Just 7 percent of all voters in the Big Apple backed his candidates. Many of those voters who backed Mamdani's primary victories are white, young, or have a high income.

However, the wins also left black and Hispanic communities feeling burned by the elections. A video of a crowd erupting in boos and chants of "you're next" took place when House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries was on the screen of a TV at Claire Valdez's election watch party.

“To be shouting ‘you’re next’ — a majority white audience to a black man — just harkens back to some dark times in history," Queens Borough President Donovan Richards said, per the Gothamist. For incumbent Democrat Adriano Espaillat's watch party in Washington Heights, the crowd was made up of older Latino New Yorkers. Avila Chevalier's crowd was a younger crowd of supporters gathered at in Hamilton Heights, a wealthier part of Harlem.

When Mamdani was asked why Avila Chevalier had lost the black and Latino vote in her district, the socialist mayor responded that he had not yet "dug into the granular details" of the election.
