New York Attorney General Letitia James has been indicted by a grand jury in Virginia. The Department of Justice announced that an indictment has been returned charging James with bank fraud and false statements to a financial institution.
US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Lindsey Halligan, said in a statement, "No one is above the law. The charges as alleged in this case represent intentional, criminal acts and tremendous breaches of the public’s trust. The facts and the law in this case are clear, and we will continue following them to ensure that justice is served." If convicted, James could face up to 30 years in prison and up to a $1 million fine on each count.
This comes after the Department of Justice began investigating claims of mortgage fraud against James. In his referral to the DOJ, Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte alleged that James had made false statements on mortgage applications in order to secure more favorable loans.
US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Lindsey Halligan, presented evidence on Thursday to the grand jury seeking an indictment against James, per ABC News. Halligan was appointed as a US attorney by Trump after her predecessor, Erik Siebert, was ousted.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul wrote in response to the indictment, "New Yorkers know @NewYorkStateAG James for her integrity, her independence, and her relentless fight for justice. What we’re seeing today is nothing less than the weaponization of the Justice Department to punish those who hold the powerful accountable."
