AI dispatchers replace humans for New Orleans 911 calls

New Orleans is turning to artificial intelligence to help handle the thousands of emergency calls received by the city each day.

The city recently confirmed that its emergency services are deploying an AI-powered triage system designed to screen and sort incoming 911 calls before they reach human operators. The system is overseen by the Orleans Parish Communication District and is intended to reduce repetitive calls and prevent emergency lines from becoming overwhelmed.

In essence if a New Orleans resident calls the emergency line for an already reported event like a car crash an AI not a human will handle it. The technology is referred to as AI emergency Call Triage was created by Carbyne an AI emergency service company. While the technology is still undergoing extensive testing per reporting done by Shreveport Times it has been involved in real life situations since 2023.

Other cities have also begun testing similar systems. The Seattle Fire Department has used an AI-powered triage system to monitor medical calls and provide recommendations to operators about when emergency services should be dispatched, per the Seattle Times. Boston Emergency Medical Services has also used AI technology developed by Corti.

However, the growing use of AI in emergency services has raised concerns about privacy and the accuracy of AI-generated responses. Critics have also questioned whether callers should be explicitly informed when artificial intelligence is involved in handling emergency calls.

As more cities adopt the technology, questions remain about how much responsibility should be placed on artificial intelligence during emergencies and whether human dispatchers can properly intervene when situations become more complicated.
