Environment Canada has issued an air quality statement for Toronto and many other regions in Ontario. The government agency's statement includes concerns about high levels of wildfire smoke, which can lead to an increase in air pollution and reduced visibility.

"Smoke plumes from active forest fires in northwestern Ontario might affect portions of southern Ontario this afternoon. Particulate matter combining with ground level ozone may deteriorate the air quality," a release on the statement issued reads.

The Environment Canada team warned Ontario residents to take extra precautions if they are exposed to wildfire smoke. It is best to look out for the following symptoms: Increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches, or shortness of breath. Additionally, Environment Canada states that it is especially important to keep a close eye on children, seniors, and people with cardiovascular or lung disease.

Based on data from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, there were over 150 fires in the province as of July 24. This week alone, hundreds of First Nations people from the Northwestern Ontario region had to temporarily relocate to a Mississauga hotel after wildfires threatened their communities.
