United Conservative Premier of Alberta Jason Kenney shot down the idea of mandatory vaccination for citizens on Friday, following the announcement by Trudeau's health minister Jean Yves Duclos that the provinces would be considering the move.

"Alberta's Legislature removed the power of mandatory vaccination from the Public Health Act last year and will not revisit the decision, period," wrote Kenney on Twitter.

Kenney said that while he "strongly encourage[s]" those who are eligible to get vaccinated, "it is ultimately a personal choice that individuals must make."

Kenney's comments came after Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos insisted that vaccinations remain the only way out of the pandemic.

"I'm signaling this is a conversation which I believe provinces and territories, in support with the federal government, will want to have over the next weeks and months," said Duclos.
