Following a widespread search along the South Saskatchewan River, the body of a man missing since Saturday evening has been located.

Officers received a report of a possible drowning just after 6 pm on Saturday at the Redcliff River Valley Park, reported Chat News Today. "His friend attempted to enter the river to assist him; however, ultimately, he was last seen going under the water," Cpl. Troy Savinkoff said.

Witnesses said the man was swimming with his friends when he tried to cross the river. However, he experienced difficulty halfway.

Redcliff RCMP, Redcliff Fire, Halo Air Ambulance, South East Search and Rescue and emergency crews from Medicine Hat responded to the scene. The search was called off at around 10 p.m. last night due to darkness.

RCMP confirmed the deceased body was found in the river by the Medicine Hat Aquatics team around 6:50 pm Sunday. Cpl. Troy Savinkoff confirmed the missing man is a 34-year-old Redcliff resident. Police are unable to release the name as of yet.

Police said the body would be transported to the medical examiner’s office to determine the additional factors, if any, that played a role in the death. Family members of the man have been notified.
