The Trump administration has ordered federal employees to remove pronouns from their email signatures by Friday evening, according to internal memos obtained by ABC News. The memos cited recent executive orders signed by President Trump, which mandates the elimination of diversity, equity, and inclusion policies in the federal government that were implemented under the Biden administration.

An email sent Friday morning by Jason Bonander, chief information officer of the CDC, read: "Pronouns and any other information not permitted in the policy must be removed from CDC/ATSDR employee signatures by 5 pm ET on Friday. Staff are being asked to alter signature blocks by 5 pm ET today (Friday, January 31, 2025) to follow the revised policy."

The Department of Transportation issued a similar directive on Thursday, sources told the network. Federal employees were told to remove pronouns from all government-related business matters, including grant applications and email signatures.

Additionally, federal employees at the Department of Energy were also instructed to remove their pronouns in order to comply with the requirements of Trump's executive order, which mandates the elimination of DEI "language in Federal discourse, communications, and publications."

Instructions for editing email signatures were included in the directives.

The president signed a pair of executive orders on January 20, just hours after being sworn into office. These orders called for the extinction of "radical and wasteful DEI programs" and the restoration of "biological truth to the federal government." The emails that were sent to agencies this week included references to both of these orders.
