According to an official report, 922 violations of the federal COVID mask mandate for various types of public transportation have been issued since the mandate has been in place. The total amount of fines handed out is $644,398.
The mandate has been enforced since Feb 2021 on all commercial flights, buses, trains, ferries and other public transportation services, as well as in all airports and terminals for such modes of transportation.
The report was released on Monday by the US federal government's Government Accountability Office (GAO), and also details many other government actions taken in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
It also notes that there have been over 7000 reported incidents since the mask mandate has been in effect, along with 2,700 formal warnings issued to maskless travellers.
The report also indicated that, while the TSA is generally in charge of enforcing these mandates and proposing fines, they are not the only government entity involved in ensuring compliance with mask mandates:
The GAO's report also stated that "separately, the FAA investigates incidents of unruly passengers who interfere with crew members in their duties, including times when they have been asked to comply with the face mask security directive."
The TSA has recently announced that the mask mandate will be extended through April 18.
