In the past 12 months, job growth for Americans has surged as there has been a decline in employment among foreign workers. This comes as the Trump administration has cracked down on illegal immigration after Presdient Trump took office in January.

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that since July 2024 to July 2025, job growth has grown by nearly 2 million for those who are native born Americans, an increase of 1.52 percent of American-born workers over the age of 16.

In July there were 133,035,000 native-born Americans who were employed as opposed to 131,037,000 for the same month in 2024, a difference of 1,998,000. At the same time, there has been a decrease of foreign-born individuals working in the United States.

There has been a decrease of foreign-born held jobs in the United States from 452,000 in the same time span. The number of foreign-born workers holding jobs in the United States in July last year was 32,518,000. That number has decreased by 1.39 percent, to 32,066,000.

Trump's Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer told reporters that "the promises made the president were that he was going to pay attention to the American worker, and that’s why you’re seeing American-born jobs be increased,” per Fox Business.

"Under President Biden," Chavez-DeRemer went on, "50 percent of those jobs went to foreign workers. That’s not a promise the president made to the American people. He said, ‘I’m going to focus on you,’" she added.

"Every decision that the Department of Labor makes and every decision in conjunction with this administration puts the American worker at the pinnacle of every decision, and that’s what is important for them to know, that they’re being put first."

Some Democratic politicians have argued that foreign-born workers are needed in order to fill job positions that some Americans are not willing to do. Chavez-DeRemer responded to this claim: "We see it in the numbers. Americans are willing to do the job. That’s what we’re out there to do. What we have to give them is the opportunity to have those jobs."

The numbers on the amount of foreign-born and native-born come after a jobs report showed that there have not been large job gains in the US market overall over the past few months.
