Amy Klobuchar says Biden admin should regulate social media to fight 'misinformation'

The former 2020 Democratic presidential candidate argues that social media companies should be regulated so they have "limits" on "certain kinds of speech" that are deemed to be "misinformation."

Senator Amy Klobuchar appeared on Sunday's episode of NBC's "Meet the Press" to talk with host Chuck Todd about her legislative focus on big tech in the new year.

During the interview, she argued that social media companies should be regulated so they have "limits" on "certain kinds of speech" that are deemed to be "misinformation."

Todd asked the Minnesota Senator about her legislative plans to allow for more of a distinction between tech companies and news outlets, in particular, if she could potentially amend Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act from 1996, which states that "No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider."

"Yes, you can amend it and focus on certain kinds of speech misinformation," Klobuchar said, saying that any amendments would be an acknowledgment that "we know people are going to put stuff on your alleged 'Town Square,' which has become really a communications company."

"[NBC News and] other news organizations have limits in place and standards," she added, arguing that social media companies have now become publishers.

"if you start making money off of it, if you amplify it, that's a whole different thing," claiming that the "angry emojis" are a part of all the things they're doing "to make money."

Since Elon Musk took the helm of social media giant Twitter last year, Democrats have been crying foul over the perceived amplification of what they deem to be "misinformation."

Musk has said that he wants the company to "follow the science", as opposed to the woke narrative. He announced on Monday that the latest edition of the Twitter Files, dubbed "the Fauci Files," will be released later this week.
