Far-left radical 501(c)(3) nonprofit Southern Coalition for Social Justice (SCSJ) is representing convicted North Texas Antifa terrorist Savanna Sue Batten as she appeals her 50-year federal prison sentence.

Batten was proven at trial in March to have provided material support to terrorists, conspiracy to use and carry an explosive, using and carrying an explosive, and rioting.

Jurors heard from dozens of witnesses and saw extensive evidence showing the planning, coordination and training by members of their cell for the July 4, 2025 ambush shooting.

The SCSJ statement about Batten says that “when she went to prison, she left behind six rescued hermit crabs and a cat named Garfielda.” The group misled the public and donors by claiming Batten was convicted and sentenced for “attending a protest and running a book club.”

Batten and several others in the cell played an important role in making radicalizing anti-government violent extremist propaganda materials which formed the basis of the cell’s ideology. Co-defendant Maricela Rueda had her husband, Mexican man Daniel Rolando Sanchez Estrada, hid evidence of the propaganda after she was arrested, but this conspiracy was uncovered and proven at trial.

Batten was among 16 convicted for the shooting attack on the Prairieland Detention Center or the effort to hide the ringleader, Benjamin Song, as he evaded authorities for 11 days.

On Tuesday, Savanna Batten filed a federal notice of appeal.

“This conviction is the continuation of a campaign of terror and violence that has been allowed to imprison people speaking out against the immigration policies of the administration,” Batten said in a quote provided through the SCSJ.

In the days since last week’s first batch of sentencing, Antifa and their supporters on Bluesky have been issuing death threats against the sentencing judges.

The SCSJ is among dozens of far-left extremist nonprofits that provide legal aid to violent far-left extremists. These legal groups frequently employ communist and/or anarchist attorneys and paralegals who have a shared anti-American and anti-government agenda.

The SCSJ was reached for comment.
