This opening weekend for King of Kings marks "the biggest-ever debut for an animated biblical film," notes Collider. The film "broke the $14 million record set by DreamWorks' The Prince of Egypt back in 1998," they note.
King of Kings, directed by Seong-ho Jang, tracks Charles Dickens and his son, who time travel to Biblical times. The film features an all-star cast of voice actors, including Oscar Isaac as Jesus Christ, Uma Thurman, Mark Hamill, Kenneth Branagh, Pierce Brosnan, Roman Griffin Davis, Ben Kingsley, and Forest Whitaker.
The primarily Korean award-winning production team specializes in VFX (visual effects), with director Jang having pioneered much of the VFX in Korean cinema. Angel Studios broke onto the scene a few years ago with the film The Sound of Freedom and presented itself as something of a Hollywood alternative. They teamed up with The Daily Wire for the release of their film Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot. Now, the studio is attracting Hollywood talent.
Angel Studios' synopsis reads: "A father tells his son the greatest story ever told, and what begins as a bedtime tale becomes a life-changing journey. Through vivid imagination, the boy walks alongside Jesus, witnessing His miracles, facing His trials, and understanding His ultimate sacrifice. The King of Kings invites us to rediscover the enduring power of hope, love, and redemption through the eyes of a child."
