Antisemitic hate crimes in New York City rose by 92 percent in March 2022 compared to 2021, continuing an increasing trend in antisemitic incidents in New York from previous months, according to data recently released by the New York City Police Department.
23 hate crimes against Jews were reported in the city last month which was 11 more than were reported in March 2021. According to the data, there were more antisemitic incidents than any other type of hate crime in March. Only anti-Asian hate crimes compared.
According to the Jerusalem Post there was a 400 percent increase in antisemitic incidents in February 2022 compared to February 2021, with 56 reported this year compared to 11 last year.
January 2022 showed an almost 300 percent increase in antisemitic hate crimes compared to January 2021.
Last week, six Jewish boys aged 12 to 16 were the target of antisemitic intimidation in Manhattan by three other teenagers who were armed with a knife, sword and crowbar. The trio said they wanted to "get" the boys because they were Jewish and followed them home. This was on the Upper West Side.
A 16-year-old boy has been charged with gang assault and assault as a hate crime after he allegedly pushed and kicked a Hasidic man in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood without provocation.
Last month, a Jewish teenager was punched in the face in Brooklyn on the Jewish Sabbath, following an attack on a Jewish school bus with children inside.
Antisemitic hate crimes were not the only ones on the rise. Islamophobic incidents doubled, hate crimes related to ethnicity tripled and hate crimes related to sexual orientation increased from three to ten.
Additionally, out of 569 hate crime arrests in the city from 2015 to 2020, only 15 percent resulted in a conviction, according to city date.
According to the NYPD, "Overall index crime increased by 36.5% in March 2022, compared to the same period a year ago (9,873 v. 7,232) – a total driven by a 59.4% increase in grand larceny auto (1,044 v. 655), a 48.4% increase in robbery (1,267 v. 854), and a 40.5% increase in grand larceny (4,078 v. v. 2,902). Citywide burglaries also increased by 40% (1,326 v. 947) in March 2022 compared to last year."
Additionally, "Citywide shooting incidents increased by 16.2% (115 v. 99) in March 2022 compared with the same period last year."
