Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez has been chronicling her egg-freezing procedure online with daily updates, detailing the physical side effects of hormone injections for egg freezing, the cost of the treatment, and anytime she goes to get an ultrasound. The series of videos, which she started last week, have been posted every day, sometimes two at a time.
For “Day 5” of the videos, Ocasio-Cortez stood in front of her camera and said she felt bloated following what she described as a several-week process to freeze her eggs. “Let’s talk about side effects. I’m feeling them,” she said, later adding, “the bloat is real.”
“Biologically, your ovaries usually are the size of walnuts inside your body, and in this process, they can grow to as big as an orange,” she said. “So I'm going to have two oranges. Some people even say grapefruit. So you're going from a walnut to a full orange inside your body.”
She said, “the hormones have not changed yet,” noting she has another appointment in a few days “in which they might start changing the doses, but I also hear that later on, the mood stuff really starts to kick in.”
In another video posted for “Day 5,” she talked about the financial costs of having the procedure and compared them to buying a “used car.” Ocasio-Cortez said that she is lucky to have been able to afford the procedure, citing her background as being a waitress and claiming to grow up in a working-class family. The congresswoman, however, grew up in a wealthy Westchester suburb.
In another video posted to her Instagram story, she said that insurance is paying for none of it and that men should not criticize her because they don't "understand the first thing about a woman's body."
The congresswoman has been making $174,000 annually for nearly eight years. Despite that, she still has student loan debt she has yet pay off, per the New York Post. Since 2018, she has owned between $15,000 and $50,000 in student loans.
In the latest video from the series, the congresswoman had her second ultrasound, where she emphasized that this is a very personal thing for her, as well as other women and that others should not judge older women for freezing their eggs. Ocasio-Cortez is having the procedure done at age 36.
The New York congresswoman has been posting regular updates on the process since announcing last weekend that she was freezing her eggs. In earlier videos, she showed herself administering the daily hormone shots, discussed the roughly $8,000 out-of-pocket cost and framed the decision as a way to “feel more in control” of her life. She has repeatedly said women are not given enough information about fertility options and has tied the decision to broader political arguments about reproductive care. This also comes as Ocasio-Cortez has split from her longtime partner and fiancé, Riley Roberts.
The egg-freezing saga has further fueled speculation that Ocasio-Cortez is planning a 2028 presidential run. In a simultaneous interview on ABC’s “This Week,” the congresswoman declined to rule out a 2028 presidential run, saying she was “very humbled” by the support and that she had “not ruled out the possibility.” She insisted her current focus remains the midterms but added that “anything is possible at this juncture,” including a potential challenge to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
This comes as a recent poll found her leading or near the top of the early 2028 Democratic primary field in New Hampshire, a state that will be key for whatever candidate takes up the left lane of the party.
