AOC says Hamas laying down weapons, releasing hostages, would not end the war in Gaza

"The actions of Hamas should not be tied to whether a 3-year-old can eat."

On Sunday, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said that she does not believe the war between Israel and Hamas would end if Hamas laid down their weapons.

In an interview on CNN's State of the Union, host Jake Tapper asked the congresswoman if she disagreed with Israel's claim that "this war could end tomorrow if Hamas freed the hostages and laid down the arms."

"I do disagree," Ocasio-Cortez said. "Because when we are talking about famine, the actions of Hamas should not be tied to whether a 3-year-old can eat. The actions of Hamas do not justify forcing thousands, hundreds of thousands of people to eat grass as their bodies consume themselves."

In another part of the interview, the congresswoman claimed that the situation in Gaza has turned into a "genocide" because the blocking of aid has caused a famine among the citizens of the region.

On Friday, Ocasio-Cortez took to the House floor to call for President Biden to suspend US aid to Israel. "As we speak, at this moment 1.1 million innocents in Gaza are at famine's door," she said.

"That is being done intentionally, precipitated through the blocking of food and global humanitarian assistance by leaders in the Israeli government," Ocasio-Cortez continued. "Much of this was accomplished with US resources and weapons."

Earlier this month, anti-Israeli protesters chased the congresswoman out of a movie theater in Brooklyn as they demanded she call the Jewish state's war against the Palestinian terrorist group a "genocide."

In the video, protestors said, "You refuse to call it a genocide" while Ocasio-Cortez tried to leave.

"I need you to understand that this is not okay," she told the protestors.

They responded, "It's not okay that there is a genocide happening and you're not actively against it. If you can’t say it, just say it. Literally. We’re just talking to you like normal people. Just say it’s a genocide. Just say it.”
