Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York tweeted out that "In Texas, Republicans passed a law allowing rapists for suing their victims for getting an abortion." The only problem is that it's not true.
Texas did pass a ban on abortion, which is not enforceable by law enforcement but relies on average citizens to report those who are performing or facilitating abortions. A woman who is seeking an abortion is not liable to be sued or prosecuted under the law.
"While abortion patients themselves can't be sued under the new law, anyone who performs or aids with the abortion can be sued — and by almost anyone," The Texas Tribune reported in September.
"Legal experts interviewed by The Texas Tribune have said the law dramatically expands the concept of a civil lawsuit and is aimed at keeping providers from using the constitutional right to an abortion under Roe v. Wade as a legal defense," they wrote.
While AOC undoubtedly hates this whole law, since she's in favor of abortion, the law does not say what she says it does.
The law is among many that are polarizing Democrat-led states against Republican-led states. Blue states, California, Connecticut, and Colorado among them, have identified themselves as "sanctuary states" for abortion, while others, Texas, Florida, Missouri, and others, are instituting limits on the practice.
