Austin and Travis county have experienced a soaring number of COVID cases which may result in the imposition of a curfew, according to Dr. Mark Escott of Austin Public Health.
At a Monday at press conference, Dr. Escott claimed that Austin health facilities were running out of beds in hospitals and ICU's, and that they may be full within one or two weeks.
This means that possible stricter measures, including possible curfews, may have to be in place by the weekend, according to local ABC outlet KVUE.
"When I say a 'state of emergency,' I mean we will start 2021 with our hospitals full or nearly full," said Escott.
He went on to talk about that, if things continue as they are, "we are going to have further discussions about the possibility of a curfew now towards the end of this week to try to help mitigate that risk," Dr. Escott explained. "We don't have much capacity left in our hospitals."
Austin Public Health has urged people to not go out and to not celebrate New Year's Eve with people outside of one's household.
Austin is currently in Stage 5 of its lockdown for the first time as of Dec. 23, and is expected to stay there for the near future.
