"I’ve asked her, the VP, today — because she’s the most qualified person to do it."
In March 2021, President Joe Biden tapped his VP Kamala Harris to deal with the border. Harris, dubbed the "border czar," was meant to "tackle the migration challenge at the U.S. southern border and work with Central American nations to address root causes of the problem," the AP wrote at the time.
In a bizarre attempted fact-check, Axios claimed on Wednesday that she never was the border czar. They claim that the Trump campaign lied when saying that "Harris was appointed 'border czar' in March of 2021, and since that time, millions and millions of illegal aliens have invaded our country and countless Americans have been killed by migrant crime because of her willful demolition of America borders and laws."
Biden and Harris met with HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and others on the border team to "discuss the increase in migrants, including many unaccompanied minors," who were crossing the border since Biden took office.
"I’ve asked her, the VP, today — because she’s the most qualified person to do it — to lead our efforts with Mexico and the Northern Triangle and the countries that help — are going to need help in stemming the movement of so many folks, stemming the migration to our southern border," Biden said in March 2021.
He continued "...this increase has been consequential, but the Vice President has agreed — among the multiple other things that I have her leading — and I appreciate it — agreed to lead our diplomatic effort and work with those nations to accept re- the returnees, and enhance migration enforcement at their borders — at their borders."
Two weeks in, Harris hadn't done anything other than have a phone call with the president of Guatemela where they "reaffirmed their commitment to addressing the root causes of migration by combating corruption, promoting economic opportunity, and enhancing civilian security."
In April 2021, Harris declared that anti-LGBTQ sentiment is a major "root cause" of "irregular migration." It was in the meeting she'd set up on that phone call with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei.
"There are also longstanding issues that are often called the ‘root causes’ of immigration," Harris said. "We are looking at the issue of poverty and the lack, therefore, of economic opportunities; the issue of extreme weather conditions and the lack of climate adaptation; as well as corruption and the lack of good governance; and violence against women, Indigenous people, LGBTQ people, and Afro-descendants."
By June, the vice president's office was already trying to get her off the job. Instead of focusing on border concerns, a chief part of her mandate from Biden, Harris' office said she wanted to focus on "root causes" of migration. It was reported to CNN that Harris' aides had begun to "panic" after Biden gave her the new assignment, saying that it was "mischaracterized." They also worried, apparently, that she would be criticized for not performing well in the new role.
The numbers of illegal immigrants crossing the border have skyrocketed under Biden's presidency as he reversed rules requiring asylum seekers to wait outside the Us while their cases were pending in courts. Biden has granted them access to the US, work visas, free cell phones, free travel, and other perks.
"Needless to say," Harris said in March 2021, "the work will not be easy. But it is important work." Biden assigned Harris to the job, the AP said, in hopes to "show Americans he’s taking the situation at the border seriously."
Since then, millions have entered the country illegally. Allegations that DHS and HSS have been complicit in human trafficking abound. Illegal immigrant children are missing in the US. American cities are bursting at the seems, unable to cope with the new people, and Harris has done nothing to secure the country, aid the illegal immigrants, or tackle the thing she claims as her job, the "root causes" of migration.
