The Satanic Temple, based in Salem, Massachusetts, got a permit to place their display of Baphomet, an occult deity with yellow eyes wearing purple upside-down crosses near the New Hampshire Statehouse, per Boston.com. The display depicted the Satanic Temple’s “seven fundamental tenets.”
However, police believe that between early Sunday and Monday afternoon, the satanic mannequin was "completely destroyed," with only its legs sitting upright. The torso as well as the head of the statue were strewn across the ground. The city initially allowed the display, officials claimed, because they wanted to "avoid litigation," the outlet reported.
Democrat State Rep. Ellen Read reportedly asked the Satanic Temple to join in on the display near the Nativity because she wanted their participation to symbolize "our pluralistic society."
"I’ve just been a longtime supporter of TST in terms of their beliefs and the work that they do. I’m local, so I helped with the permitting process, and I was there for the unveiling," Read said. The Democrat then went on to claim that there was nothing wrong with the display.
"There was nothing inherently offensive about the display. There were accusations that it meant to denigrate Christians, but there was nothing about it that was denigrating Christians. If you don’t want to allow it for all religions, then you don’t have to allow religious displays," Read added.
The local Satanic Temple leader, Vivian Kelly, praised the city for allowing it to be there in the first place, saying that the officials expressed "courage."
“It takes a lot of courage to stand up, and for someone to do so in politics really warms my heart," Kelly said. She then claimed, “Just because we’re not large in numbers doesn’t mean our beliefs are less important than any of the other religions represented here."
Police are reportedly investigating the destruction of the statue, but are not treating it as a high crime, per WMUR9.
