“A massive abuse of taxpayer dollars not only occurred under President [Joe] Biden’s watch."

A report from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has found that over $5 billion in taxpayer funds have gone to “questionable” recipients in rental assistance programs during the last year of the Biden administration. The report said that the assistance has included 30,000 deceased tenants as well as thousands of potential non-citizens getting the assistance.

HUD's Office of the Chief Financial Officer found there was $5.8 billion in "questionable" payments of the $50 billion in housing assistance programs in Fiscal Year 2024 that flowed out of the Biden administration, according to the 183-page report.

Around one dollar in 10 went to potentially fraudulent or otherwise ineligible tenants. Of the 200,000 questionable tenants, 29,715 were dead, 9,472 were non-citizens, and over 165,000 were getting amounts of payments that exceeded their necessary assistance in places such as New Orleans and other large metro areas.

HUD pointed at the Biden administration for a directive “to push funding out the door with minimal oversight” as well as rent assistance programs placing “substantial trust and responsibility in these non-federal entities … to accurately assess tenant eligibility.”

“A massive abuse of taxpayer dollars not only occurred under President [Joe] Biden’s watch, but was effectively incentivized by his administration’s failure to implement strong financial controls resulting in billions worth of potential improper payments," HUD Secretary Scott Turner said, per the New York Post.

Officials with HUD said that a "large concentration" of questionable payments went to New York, California, as well as Washington, DC. In all 50 states there were dead recipients as well in what the officials called an abuse of taxpayer funds under former President Joe Biden.

“HUD will continue investigating the shocking results and will take appropriate action to hold bad actors accountable. Additionally, the Department is advancing efforts made under President Trump’s first administration to strengthen program integrity and ensure taxpayer-funded assistance serves the vulnerable communities it was intended for," Turner added.
