The White House has formally declared its support for a bill that would grant the District of Columbia its statehood.

The Biden administration stated that this bill would provide D.C's residents with their "long overdue full representation in Congress," according to The Hill.

The District would almost certainly favor the Democratic Party and would greatly benefit the party when it comes to electoral votes in presidential elections.

"Establishing the State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth as the 51st state will make our Union stronger and more just," wrote the administration.

"Washington, DC has a robust economy, a rich culture, and a diverse population of Americans from all walks of life who are entitled to full and equal participation in our democracy," they added.

The District is home to around 700 thousand people, which is a greater number than some states like Vermont. The House is scheduled to vote on the bill this week.

It is unclear whether this bill would pass as the Democrats would need the support of a chunk of GOP senators. On top of this, the Democrats also do not have the support of all of their own party's senators.
