Biden’s Assistant Secretary for Health has warned pediatricians that medicine and science are being politically perverted and so called on them to be activists who spread the word about the importance of gender-affirming care, not just in a medical setting but also in schools, recreation centers, and professional organizations.
In a clip shared on Twitter by Megan Brock, Levine delivers an impassioned call to action to an audience of doctors attending the Pitt Pediatric Grand Rounds lecture, calling on them to become “ambassadors for science, ambassadors for compassion, and ambassadors for care.”
“These conversations don't have to be limited or restricted to a medical setting,” explained Levine. “Offer yourselves as informational resources, not just for youth but for school teachers, principals, school boards, professional organizations, recreation centers, county commissioners, and others who would benefit from this information in your perspective.”
“Please proactively seek opportunities to speak about what you know. Our task is to educate the public in as many forums as possible. We need to have these conversations that question the assumptions that are underlying today's attacks on trans people. Pushing back the veil of ignorance demands this extra effort.”
“I believe in our role as healers. I believe in our role as truth-tellers,” said the biological male who medically transitioned in middle age after fathering children and now advocates for minors to be allowed to sacrifice their fertility because they’ve been sold the lie that it’s possible to change sex.
Levine then went on to say that medicine and science are being “politically perverted” around the U.S. and that the attacks on the transgender community are driven by an agenda of politics, that it has nothing to do with medicine and nothing to do with science, and accusing opponents of pediatric medical transition of “rejecting well-established science.”
Except there’s no “well-established science” to reject. There’s just ideologically driven care being pushed onto children by a political movement spearheaded by the likes of Levine. Sweden, Finland, and England have all recently done systematic reviews of the evidence for affirming minors and attempting to change their sex with experimental puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones, and each of the three nations found the evidence to be of extremely low quality. Sweden and Finland have already banned the medical transition of minors outside of the strictest of clinical trial settings and England is expected to follow suit in the coming months. The American Academy of Pediatrics has ignored calls for it to perform a systematic review of the evidence for the affirmative approach it endorses, preferring instead to back invasive and irreversible procedures being performed on American children without any solid evidence base to suggest it is the right course of treatment.
There is mounting evidence to indicate that gender-affirming doctors are getting this very wrong. There are medical malpractice lawsuits in the U.S., England, and Australia underway, brought by young people who were inappropriately affirmed and allowed to consent to medical transition when they were young and in a state of extreme mental distress. Studies in the process of being published also show that the detransition rate is much higher than the “less than 1 percent” narrative pushed by proponents of gender-affirming care. One Canadian study soon to be published shows a 16 percent detranstion rate, and another American one shows a 30 percent detransition rate.
