Bill Maher says Whoopi Goldberg shouldn't be cancelled over Holocaust comments

"Goldberg — who by the way I hope is still a friend, we can disagree with each other — should not be cancelled," he said.

Comedian Bill Maher defended actress Whoopi Goldberg on his Friday night edition of Real Time with Bill Maher. "Goldberg — who by the way I hope is still a friend, we can disagree with each other — should not be cancelled," he said.

"I got so many texts this week because she attacked me last week. 'Oh Bill, you're enjoying the Karma.' First of all... there is no f*cking thing as Karma," said Maher. "She attacks me on a regular basis. She says stupid sh*t on a regular basis. It just happened to coincide."

"As much as I totally disagree with her crazy statement. Free speech. She should be there. She shouldn't get a timeout," Maher said and then also lambasted The View. "It's The View? Well, that's the problem in America, there is only one view, true opinion and everybody else can go sit in the corner?"

Last week, Whoopi Goldberg on The View claimed that the Holocaust, in which the white supremacist Nazi Party murdered 6 million Jewish people, was not about race. "Let's be truthful about it," she said, "because the Holocaust isn't about race."

She then apologized for her controversial comments saying, "On today's show, I said the Holocaust 'is not about race, but about man's inhumanity to man.' I should have said it is about both." Goldberg's heavily-criticized remarks led to the network suspending her for two weeks.

In a message to staffers by ABC News president Kim Godwin, the executive said that Goldberg's suspension and other such decisions "are never easy, but necessary."

"I want to follow up with you all regarding Whoopi Goldberg's comments on 'The View' yesterday that were misinformed, upsetting and hurtful. I have made the decision to suspend Whoopi from 'The View' for two weeks effective immediately," Godwin began.

"These decisions are never easy, but necessary. Just last week, I noted that the culture at ABC News is one that is driven, kind, inclusive, respectful, and transparent. Whoopi's comments do not align with those values."
