A black, Democrat representative from Georgia has openly referred to attacks against Trump supporters as hate crimes. This comes as videos of people being beaten and assaulted because of their support for the president circulate online.
Georgia Representative Vernon Jones took to Twitter on Tuesday to express his discontent with a number of videos that have spread across social media, featuring Trump supporters being assaulted on the basis of their political ideology.
The tweet reads: "I’ve watched countless videos of Trump supporters getting attacked in the streets simply due to their support of @realDonaldTrump. Let’s call this what this is: a hate crime. And as we return to the legislature next week, I’ll be introducing legislation that’ll make it such."

Let’s call this what this is: a hate crime. And as we return to the legislature next week, I’ll be introducing legislation that’ll make it such.
The Herald News reported that 82-year-old Charlie Chase, an Air Force veteran and Trump supporter, was assaulted by a 27-year-old last Wednesday for simply holding up a Trump campaign sign.
A GoFundMe was started for Chase as a result.
Another instance of abuse against a Trump supporter was reported on by Fox 17 Nashville, where a 34-year-old man allegedly attacked a 15-year-old supporter of the president during the New Hampshire primaries back in February.
A black Trump supporter had voiced his opinion on immigration, saying that he had grown up in the black community and had seen problems with immigration before a 20-year-old surfaced from the crowd and punched him as a result. The perpetrator, Richard Losey, was charged "on suspicion of misdemeanor battery with a hate crime enhancement."
A video shows a young Trump supporter getting surrounded by an angry anti-Trump crowd before one of the women spits in his face. People followed that up with throwing water bottles at him and calling him names.

And an NYC gallery owner claims that he was jumped by a bunch of teens for wearing a Make America Great Again hat. The man can be seen with a purple face and damage to his eye.
It is not yet clear whether other Democrats will back Jones in his mission of adding physical attacks against those with whom you you disagree with politically to hate crime legislation.
