The move is to be more "inclusive" for those in the program.
For the first time in its 114-year history, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is changing its name to "Scouting America" in a recent shift to become more inclusive.
“In the next 100 years we want any youth in America to feel very, very welcome to come into our programs,” BSA President Roger Krone said in a statement before the announcement. The organization began allowing gay adults to be scouting leaders beginning in 2015 and made the announcement in 2017 that girls could join the BSA program.
The organization has been rife with controversy with sexual assault claims in recent years.
In a press release, BSA wrote, "This announcement also comes as the organization celebrates the fifth anniversary of welcoming girls into Cub Scouting and Scouts BSA programs."
“Though our name will be new, our mission remains unchanged: we are committed to teaching young people to be Prepared. For Life,” said Krone in the release. “This will be a simple but very important evolution as we seek to ensure that everyone feels welcome in Scouting.”
Online, many slammed the organization for the change.
One user commented, "I used to be proud of being an Eagle Scout. Shame on you [BSA]."
Another also recounted getting his Eagle Scout award and said, "I guess my Eagle and God and Country award are now garbage."
The move raises questions surrounding whether or not the Girl Scouts organization will become obsolete if there is one organization for all those wanting to be involved in scouting.
