An alligator sighting ended up being a false alarm, as it was discovered the potentially vicious reptile was, in reality, just a beaver going for a swim.

Peel Regional Police told Global News that a call was made at 8:30 pm in the Creditview Road and Bovaird Drive West area, with witnesses describing a "five-to-six foot long" animal.

Officers later determined through video captured by witnesses, that the animal was really just a beaver.

“Just to be clear, animal services has attended and also reviewed the video on social media,” said police.

“The animal … observed was determined to be a beaver.”
