"She has a mortal wound. It’s not going to be a recovery."
The father of Sarah Beckstrom, the 20-year-old West Virginia National Guard member who was shot on Wednesday in DC alongside fellow National Guard member Andrew Wolfe, 24, has said that his daughter is not expected to recover.
Speaking with the New York Times, Gary Beckstrom said, "I’m holding her hand right now." She added, "She has a mortal wound. It’s not going to be a recovery."
A man at the home of Wolfe said when reached by the New York Times, "All we need right now are prayers for my son." Both National Guard members were shot in the head.
29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who came to the US in September 2021 as part of Operation Allies Welcome, has been arrested in connection with the shooting. Metropolitan Police Department Chief Jeffrey Carroll said in a Wednesday press conference, "A suspect came around the corner, raised his arm with a firearm and discharged it at the National Guard members." Officials have called the attack "targeted."
The FBI is investigating the attack as a possible act of terrorism. The suspect allegedly shouted "Allahu akbar" during the confrontation with the Guardsmen.
