Police responded to an active shooting at Michigan State University in East Lansing Monday night. There are approximately 50,000 students on the East Lansing campus.

MSU police said 3 people have been killed and 5 have been hospitalized, some in critical condition. The victims were transported to Sparrow Hospital.

“There have been shots fired near Berkey Hall on the East Lansing campus. Please secure-in-place immediately. Police are active on scene. More information to follow,” tweeted MSUPD.

The incident took place at 8:18 pm inside Berkey Hall the location of MSU's Department of Sociology. The building is on the northern boundary of the campus.

Local reporter Roop Raj tweeted out footage of the scene.

According to police, the suspect walked to the MSU Union and opened fire. Police responded and reported multiple injuries.

The second location is approximately 19 minutes away from the initial shooting site at Berkey Hall.

MSU sent out a shelter-in-place order at 8:31 pm and told students to stay inside and barricade themselves. MSU said in the alert, "Run, Hide, Fight. Run means evacuate away from danger if you can do so safely, Hide means to secure-in-place, and Fight means protect yourself if no other option."

During a press conference late Monday night, MSU Police Interim Deputy Chief Chris Rozman said the suspect is a "black male, shorter in stature, red shoes, jean jacket, wearing a baseball cap that is navy with a lighter brim."

Hundreds of officers from the FBI, ATF, Michigan State Police, and other agencies are assisting on campus. All campus activities have been canceled for 48 hours and law enforcement is asking people not to come to campus on Tuesday.

Michigan Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer said that she has been briefed on the shooting by Michigan State Police.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
