Police rushed to the San Diego Islamic Center in California on Monday after there was a report of an active shooter situation. At least one person was killed in the shooting, according to ABC 10.

San Diego Mayor Todd Garcia said in a post on X, "I am aware of the active shooter situation at the Islamic Center of San Diego in Clairemont and am continuing to receive updates from law enforcement. Emergency personnel are on scene and actively working to protect the community and secure the area." Multiple people have been shot, Officer Anthony Carrasco told the AP. The exact number of injuries and deaths was not immediately clear.

“SDPD is on scene at the Islamic Center of San Diego in the 7000 block of Eckstrom Ave for a reported active shooter,” the San Diego Police Department said. The center was reportedly for Sunni Muslims.

“Please avoid the area. Updates to follow,” the police added in a statement. “The scene at 7050 Eckstrom Ave is still active but contained. We have significant resources on scene at this time. We have established a reunification location at 4125 Hathaway Street, SD, CA 92111.

Just after 1 pm, police said in an update that the "threat at the Islamic Center has been neutralized."

Aerial footage showed a large police presence at the Islamic center and appeared to show a body which was lying a pool of blood. An elementary school nearby was put on temporary lockdown and evacuated and authorities have asked people to avoid the area.

In the aftermath of the shooting, police were going door to door in order to find the shooter. There are three schools near the mosque, including the Islamic School of San Diego, the Clairemont Canyons Academy, and the Kavod Charter School.

A press statement from California Governor Gavin Newsom's Office said, "Gavin Newsom has been briefed on an evolving situation in Clairemont community of San Diego, near the Islamic Center."

The office added, "We are grateful to the first responders on the scene working to protect the community and urge everyone to follow guidance from local authorities.

This is a developing story. Please refresh for updates.
