Ryan "Reily" English, who is transgender, pleaded guilty in March to charges related to the attempted assassination of Bessent.
English, who is transgender, pleaded guilty in March to charges related to the attempted assassination of Bessent, who was then a Cabinet nominee. The sentencing was originally scheduled for August 14, according to the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. The case dates back to January 27, 2025, when English approached a Capitol Police officer near the South Door and said he wanted to turn himself in. Police found him carrying a folding knife, a lighter, and two Molotov cocktails made from small vodka bottles.
According to court documents, English told officers he had come to Washington with the intention of killing Bessent. Investigators also found a handwritten note in his possession referencing violence against his sisters and stating that he had been “plotting and lying.”
The attempt remained largely out of the public spotlight until Bessent spoke about it publicly more than a year later. The Treasury secretary had been confirmed by the Senate on January 27, the same day English was arrested at the Capitol.
The sentencing comes after multiple assassination attempts and plots targeting President Donald Trump and members of his administration in recent years.
This is a breaking news story.
