Republican Rep Doug LaMalfa, who represented California's First Congressional District in Congress, has died. He was 65. It is currently unclear the circumstances behind his death.

LaMalfa's death was confirmed by fellow Republican lawmakers, including House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, who wrote, "Jacquie and I are devastated about the sudden loss of our friend, Congressman Doug LaMalfa. Doug was a loving father and husband, and staunch advocate for his constituents and rural America. Our prayers are with Doug’s wife, Jill, and their children."

Rep Brian Fitzpatrick wrote, "I am incredibly saddened by the passing of my friend, Congressman Doug LaMalfa. A fourth-generation rice farmer, he was a genuinely good and decent man—steady in his leadership, guided by his values, and rooted in service. My prayers are with his wife Jill, his family, his staff, and the Northern California community he served so faithfully. He will be deeply missed, and remembered always."

Rep Tim Burchett wrote, "Say a prayer for my dear friend ⁦Doug LaMalfa’s family. He was a family man a farmer and a true patriot.

House GOP Chairwoman Lisa McClain wrote, "I’m heartbroken to learn about the sudden passing of my friend and colleague, Congressman Doug LaMalfa. Doug was a hardworking member of the House who fought tirelessly for the people of Northern California. My prayers are with his wife, Jill, and their family."

LaMalfa's death brings the Republicans' lead in the House down to 218–213, meaning the party can lose just two votes.
