Luke Letlow, who was just elected to a Louisiana House seat, died on Tuesday night from cardiac arrest after undergoing surgery related to the novel coronavirus.

According to Fox News, he was transferred to Ochsner-LSU Health Shreveport where he eventually "...suffered a cardiac event this evening that was refractory to all resuscitation efforts."

The Monroe News-Star reported that LSU Health Shreveport Chancellor G.E. Ghali said that Letlow had an operation that was related to COVID treatment and then suffered cardiac arrest.

"It's devastating to our entire team," Ghali said, noting that he "had no underlying conditions." Letlow had been expected to make a full recovery.

He is survived by his wife, Julia Barnhill-Letlow, and two children.

"The family appreciates the numerous prayers and support over the past days but asks for privacy during this difficult and unexpected time," said a spokesperson for the Letlow family.

"May it be a comfort to Luke’s wife Julia and their children Jeremiah and Jacqueline that so many mourn their loss and are praying for them at this sad time," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
