On Thursday, nearly two days after votes began to be counted in the 2024 election, Republican challenger Dave McCormick has been declared the winner of the Pennsylvania US Senate race against incumbent Democrat Bob Casey, according to the Associated Press. This comes after Donald Trump won the swing state.

The race was called with 98 percent of votes counted, with McCormick receiving 49 percent of the vote to Casey's 48.5 percent. Republicans have gained control of the Senate, with 53 seats. Two races, one in Nevada and one in Arizona remain to be called by the AP.

Bob Casey was first elected to the Senate in 2007, where he has remained until today. The last time Casey was up for reelection was in 2018, during which he defeated Republican challenger Lou Barletta 55.7 to 42.6 percent.

Ahead of the Associated Press calling the race late Thursday afternoon, McCormick's campaign communications director Elizabeth Gregory issued the statement shortly after 1 pm stating that McCormick was sure to win the race.

"McCormick is up 30,679 votes with more to come, as ruby red Cambria County is still outstanding," Gregory said in a statement, according to FOX 43. "While votes continue to be counted, any way you slice it, Dave McCormick will be the next United States Senator from Pennsylvania."

In a Thursday morning statement, Casey's campaign said, “The count in Pennsylvania is still continuing. Yesterday, the vote margin shrunk by 50,000 votes and this race is now within half a point, the threshold for automatic recounts in Pennsylvania. With tens of thousands more votes to be counted, we are committed to ensuring every Pennsylvanian's vote is heard and confident that at the end of that process, Senator Casey will be re-elected.”
