The death of actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, is being treated as "suspicious" after their bodies and that of a dog were found in their Santa Fe, New Mexico home.

According to a search warrant obtained by ABC News, their deaths were "suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation" due to "circumstances surrounding" the scene.

Their bodies were found on Wednesday afternoon during a welfare check after a neighbor called and expressed concerns about their well-being. The Daily Mail reported, however, that "Two maintenance workers called Roland Lowe Begay and Jesse Kesler discovered the bodies of Arakawa and her retired Hollywood star husband at their luxurious million Santa Fe mansion Wednesday at 1:46pm Mountain Time."

Hackman’s body was found in the mud room, the search warrant stated, with Hackman appearing to have fallen suddenly. Hackman and his wife "showed obvious signs of death."

Arakawa was found dead in the bathroom lying on her side, with a space heater near her body. She showed signs of decomposition and there was mummification to her hands and feet. On the counter near Arakawa was an opened prescription pill bottle, with pills being scattered.

Around 10 to 15 feet away from Arakawa was a dead German shepherd, but two other dogs were found alive. One healthy dog was found near Arakawa and another was located outside the home. Authorities wrote that Arakawa showed "obvious signs of death, body decomposition, bloating in her face and mummification in both hands and feet," per the New York Post.

There were no signs of a possible carbon monoxide leak or poisoning found by the Santa Fe City Fire Department. New Mexico Gas Company said that "as of now, there are no signs or evidence indicating there were any problems associated to the pipes in and around the residence."

The search warrant affidavit also stated that a maintenance worker who had initially responded to the home found the front door open, but there were no signs of a forced entry and no signs that items had been taken or looked through.
