Seeking a third term, Moskowitz beat back Oliver Larkin, a Democratic Socialists of America (DSA)-backed union organizer running against the moderate Democrat from the left.
The primary race was the latest test to see if Democrats will go in the direction of the DSA or if they will stick to more establishment-type candidates. The DSA has backed candidates that have gone on to win their primaries in New York, Colorado, and Michigan.
The loss from Larkin also comes a week after Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong—who was backed by the DSA—lost her primary.
Larkin, a veteran of Bernie Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign, has said that he supports abolishing the US Senate and argued in a Fox interview that it is an "undemocratic institution." He has also called Israel a "religious supremacist regime."
After clinching the primary, Moskowitz posted to X, "My condolences to @hasanthehun," in a jab to Hasan Piker, who has become the poster child for the DSA and the far-left.
Piker endorsed and actively fundraised for Larkin.
The DSA-endorsed candidate supports a total embargo on arms to Israel and said when he was asked if he was in favor of only defensive weapons, “I do not make a distinction between offensive and defensive weaponry.”
He also backed socialist Zohran Mamdani's notion that he could have Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrested in New York City.
