"This decision restores integrity in our immigration system and ensures that Temporary Protective Status is actually temporary."
The Department of Homeland Security announced on Friday that it has terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti after DHS Secretary Kristi Noem determined that the conditions in the Caribbean country "no longer meet the TPS statutory requirements.”
A DHS spokesperson said in a statement, "This decision restores integrity in our immigration system and ensures that Temporary Protective Status is actually temporary. The environmental situation in Haiti has improved enough that it is safe for Haitian citizens to return home. We encourage these individuals to take advantage of the Department’s resources in returning to Haiti, which can be arranged through the CBP Home app. Haitian nationals may pursue lawful status through other immigration benefit requests, if eligible."
Haiti’s TPS status will expire on August 3, 2025, and the termination will go into effect on September 2. Those Haitian nationals leaving the US were encouraged by DHS to use the CBP Home app to report their departure. DHS sources told Fox News that they are encouraging Haitians to use the app with complementary plane tickets and a $1,000 exit bonus.
A March 2025 House Judiciary report reveled that the Biden administration had "greatly expanding the scope of populations eligible for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), including through new designations, redesignations, and extensions of prior TPS designations," and that the administration "attempted to indefinitely protect from deportation hundreds of thousands of aliens from certain countries." This amounted to "de facto amnesty," they said.
The report stated that as of January 22, 2025, 1,417,265 migrants from 16 countries have been granted TPS, and that 1,006,859 migrants were added in just four years under Biden alone.
