"He condemned the heinous assassination attempt last Saturday and remarked about the American people coming together in the spirit of Unity during these times."
"President Zelenskyy of Ukraine and I had a very good phone call earlier today," Trump said. "He congratulated me on a very successful Republican National Convention and becoming the Republican nominee for President of the United States.
"He condemned the heinous assassination attempt last Saturday and remarked about the American people coming together in the spirit of Unity during these times," Trump relayed. Trump survived an assassination attempt on his life on Saturday when Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire on Trump and the crowd at a rally in Butler, PA. Crooks was then killed by Secret Service and a motive for his crime is not known. One man was killed and two others injured in the hail of bullets.
After that, the two men, per Trump, delved into a discussion of the Ukraine Russia war. Trump has promised to bring an end to the war should he be elected in November, going as far as to say that he would bring an end to the war between a November election and the January inauguration.
"I appreciate President Zelenskyy for reaching out because I, as your next President of the United States, will bring peace to the world and end the war that has cost so many lives and devastated countless innocent families," Trump continued. "Both sides will be able to come together and negotiate a deal that ends the violence and paves a path forward to prosperity."
Zelensky also posted about the call, saying "I spoke with Donald Trump to congratulate him on the Republican nomination and condemn the shocking assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. I wished him strength and absolute safety in the future. I noted the vital bipartisan and bicameral American support for protecting our nation's freedom and independence.
"Ukraine will always be grateful to the United States for its help in strengthening our ability to resist Russian terror," he continued. "Russian attacks on our cities and villages continue every day. We agreed with President Trump to discuss at a personal meeting what steps can make peace fair and truly lasting."
That the call would take place was reported earlier in the day on Friday and comes as rumors continue to swirl and deepen around Biden's continued candidacy for president. During the Biden years, the United States has given some $113 billion in military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine and toyed with the idea of even admitting the nation to the NATO. If that were to be done, Article 5, which requires all allies to come to the defense of one who is attacked, would instantly be invoked, dragging the US deeper into this war.
Trump has opposed that idea, as well as the expansion of NATO into other European nations. The US has authorized the sending of fighter planes, long-range missiles, cluster bombs, and Abrams tanks to aid the Ukrainian army in its fight. Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2021, shortly after Joe Biden took office. Trump has asserted multiple times that had he been president at the time, Russian President Vladimir Putin would never have had the temerity to invade their neighbor.
