The race was called by the Associated Press just before 9:15 pm with 57 percent of the vote in. Trump received 53.9 percent to Democratic candidate Kamala Harris' 44.9 percent.
Trump has also been declared the winner of Florida, which has 30 electoral college votes, as well as Ohio, which has 17. With Trump's win in Texas, he is at 177 votes to Harris' 99. Trump has also won states such as Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisiana, and South Carolina, while Harris has won New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and other states.
In 2020, Trump won the state with 52.1 percent of the vote to Joe Biden's 46.5 percent. Trump won Texas in 2016 with 52.2 percent of the vote to Hillary Clinton's 43.2 percent. In both those election years, Texas had 38 electoral college votes. That number rose to 40 in the current election cycle after the state gained two House seats following the 2020 census, CBS News reported. Texas' 40 votes is the second highest of any state, only surpassed by California's 54.
This is a breaking story.
