In addition to the fraud charges, the Secret Service agent could face internal insider threat allegations over poor judgement.
Multiple sources told the outlet that in the fraud scheme linked to the agent, the official accepted donations to a charity that claims to support inner-city youth as well as domestic violence victims. The Secret Service agent is on unpaid administrative leave and has been stripped of his security clearance, according to the outlet. However, the agent has not yet been arrested.
In addition to the fraud charges, the Secret Service agent could face internal insider threat allegations over poor judgement, the outlet reported. “This is bigger than the 2012 prostitution scandal because agents are trained to investigate tax and bank wire fraud – anyone involved knew what they were doing was illegal," a source familiar with the matter told reporters. The agent in question currently serves on Vice President JD Vance's detail. The charity, however, was started previous to the Trump administration.
The 2012 scandal referenced by the source refers to when over a dozen USSS agents were fired after superiors discovered they had hired prostitutes during a trip to Colombia when they were preparing for a trip involving then-President Obama.
The agent in question was listed as the founder as well as chairman of the charity's board of directors, according to RCP. The charity, on tax documents, claims that it provides “emergency assistance to survivors of domestic violence, financial literacy, preventing childhood obesity, & [stet] supporting families affected by HIV/AIDS in VA, MD, DC, & GA.”
After starting in 2022, the charity was given $351,329 in grants and donations but paid just $23,000 in salaries. The following year, contributions as well as grants totaled $806,409, but only $154,590 went to the officers that year. In the latest available year, the group got donations and grants totaling nearly $1 million but paid out $267,221 in salaries.
