Authorities confirmed that 13-year-old Endre Gunter and 12-year-old Sophia Forchas were among the 17 people wounded when 23-year-old shooter Robert "Robin" Westman opened fire during morning mass. Police said Westman, a trans-identified male, shot into the church through stained glass windows before dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The attack left two children, ages 8 and 10, dead. Their names have not yet been released. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said that of the 17 injured, 14 were children as young as six. Three elderly parishioners in their 80s were also wounded but are expected to survive, according to the Daily Mail.
Hospital officials reported Thursday that nine victims remain hospitalized, including one child still listed in critical condition.
Gunter’s family said the 13-year-old was shot in the stomach while seated in the pews. “Our son was shot at school today, inside a church praying with his classmates,” his mother, Danielle Gunter, told CNN.
Forchas was also struck during the barrage of bullets. A fundraiser set up by relatives described her as “a bright, kind, and full of life young girl” now “fighting for her life” in the intensive care unit.
Forchas’ mother was at work as an ICU nurse and had “arrived to help during the tragedy before knowing it was her children’s school that was attacked and that her daughter was critically injured.”
“Her parents are by her side, holding onto hope while also trying to support their son through the emotional aftermath,” the GoFundMe post reads. “The financial strain is enormous: ongoing ICU care, future surgeries, trauma counseling, lost income, travel, and the countless unknowns that lie ahead.”
Westman left behind a disturbing online manifesto and videos posted to YouTube ahead of the shooting, which investigators believe may shed light on a motive.
Police said the gunman fired dozens of rounds using three weapons before turning the gun on herself.
