BREAKING: Former Philly medical examiner in Ellen Greenberg case says 2011 death was 'something other than suicide'

The former medical examiner who did the autopsy report on Ellen Greenberg in 2011 and said it was a suicide when she was found dead with 20 stab wounds in her front and back, has changed his opinion on the case, labeling it “something other than suicide."

According to CBS News, Marlon Osbourne, the then-Philadelphia medical examiner in the case of Ellen Greenberg’s death in 2011, has reversed course in a verification statement provided during a settlement with Josh and Sandee Greenberg – Ellen's parents – as they are taking Philadelphia officials to trial.

Osbourne wrote in the statement, "In my professional opinion, Ellen's manner of death should be designated as something other than suicide."

Lawyers representing Greenberg’s parents said in response, "To us, it means that we've accomplished our role that Ellen did not commit a suicide. Here you have the original pathologist, finally, after 14 years after Ellen's death and five years of litigation acknowledging that her manner of death should not be suicide but should be deemed something else.”

A judge ruled on Friday that Ellen Greenberg’s parents are able to take the city officials to trial over the case, where they are accusing multiple city officials of covering up the cause of their daughter's death because of a botched investigation. Osbourne, in his autopsy findings in 2011, originally labeled the death as a homicide, but later switched the cause of death to suicide after meeting with law enforcement officials. 

In 2011, Ellen Greenberg was found dead with 20 stab wounds, 10 of which were in her back and neck. Her fiancé at the time, Samuel Goldberg, claimed that he found her in her dead with “blood everywhere” after breaking down the door of her residence to find her body. He called at around 6:31 pm. He claimed that he had just gotten back from the gym after leaving 45 minutes before. 

However, Goldberg had called his cousin, Kamian Schwartzman, at 6:14 pm for around five minutes, and shortly after, he missed several calls from his uncle, James Schwartzman, according to reporting from Gavin Fish. Both Kaiman and James are lawyers and came to building at around 6:34, but later claimed to authorities that they got to the building at around 7:30 pm. 

In addition, Ellen Greenberg had multiple bruises on her body at “various stages of resolution,” indicating that they had been happening over the course of several days, CNN has reported.  

The outlet reported in December, “Ellen had one bruise on her abdomen, three more above her right knee, three more on her right thigh. She had a large, dark bruise on her upper right arm, just below the shoulder. She had three more on her right forearm, including a vivid round one near the wrist.” 

Jury selection for the case brought by Greenberg's parents against the city will start on Monday at 9 am.
