"The security matter delaying DCA flights is related to law enforcement activity in downtown D.C., not at the airport."
A ground stop was issued for Reagan National Airport near Washington DC due to a security issue on Wednesday afternoon. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials said the ground stop, which has since been lifted, was issued in connection to a shooting in downtown Washington DC, near the White House, that saw two West Virginia National Guardsmen shot.
The FAA said that arrivals were paused at the airport "because of the locations of aircraft involved in responding to today’s shooting incident." Normal operations at Reagan have resumed. The ground stop occurred on one of the busiest travel days of the year, with Thanksgiving taking place on Thursday.
Emily McGee, media relations for DCA, told Newsweek, "The security matter delaying DCA flights is related to law enforcement activity in downtown D.C., not at the airport. DCA passengers should expect flight delays and check with their airline for schedule updates."
Late Wednesday afternoon, two members of the West Virginia National Guard were shot just blocks away from the White House in Washington, DC. The condition of the two soldiers is currently unknown, with West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey saying that his office is receiving "conflicting reports about the condition of our two Guard members and will provide additional updates once we receive more complete information."
"Our prayers are with these brave service members, their families, and the entire Guard community," he wrote.
Trump wrote in response to the shooting, "The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded, and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price."
"God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great people. I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you!" he added.
