On Monday, former Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, 72, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital from New York City’s Rikers Island for emergency open heart surgery.
"Mr. Weinstein was rushed to Bellevue Hospital last night due to several medical conditions," Craig Rothfeld and Juda Engelmayer, representatives for Weinstein told ABC News. "We can confirm that Mr. Weinstein had a procedure and surgery on his heart today however cannot comment any further than that."
"As we have extensively stated before, Mr. Weinstein suffers a plethora of significant health issues that need ongoing treatment. We are grateful to the executive team at the New York City Department of Correction and Rikers Island for acting swiftly in taking him to Bellevue Hospital," they added.
Weinstein is due back in court this week, where prosecutors have been presenting evidence to a grand jury on alleged sex crimes in an attempt to secure a new indictment against Weinstein. Weinstein has denied wrongdoing and has said that the sexual encounters with women were consensual. He recently appeared in court in a wheelchair and asked to remain in custody at Rikers, where he has been receiving medical care.
