"Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday," a spokesman said in a statement.
ABC announced last Wednesday that the show would be suspended after comments calling Charlie Kirk's assassin MAGA. Kimmel had said that the "MAGA gang" was "desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it."
The suspected killer was already known to be a leftist who was involved in a romantic relationship with a male transgender individual. Tyler Robinson allegedly said in text messages and to family members that he hated Kirk and claimed Kirk was filled with "hate."
Kimmel has been an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, a close ally of Charlie Kirk, and has frequently targeted the president’s supporters in his monologues. In a 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Kimmel discussed his approach to comedy, saying, “I don’t put limits on what I laugh at. But as I’ve gotten older, as I’ve matured, I won’t tell a joke I wouldn’t say if someone of that background or persuasion were sitting in the room.”
At the time, Nexstar media group wrote this about the "indefinite" suspension: Nexstar Media Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: NXST), today announced that the company's owned and partner television stations affiliated with the ABC Television Network would preempt "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" for the foreseeable future beginning with tonight's show. Nexstar strongly objects to recent comments made by Mr. Kimmel concerning the killing of Charlie Kirk and will replace the show with other programming in its ABC- affiliated markets.
