Fetterman tweeted moments after the race was called by Fox News and NBC News, "It's official. I will be the next U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania. We bet on the people of Pennsylvania - and you didn’t let us down And I won’t let you down. Thank you."
Despite a stroke in May which led to attacks on his fitness for office, Fetterman won the Democratic party’s nomination for the US Senate by defeating US Rep. Conor Lamb and state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta.
During their only debate, Fetterman struggled to articulate his positions and often used the wrong words but was given credit for showing up and addressing what he called the "elephant in the room."
During his campaign, Fetterman pledged to codify Roe v. Wade and end the filibuster if elected.President Joe Biden visited the state multiple times to stump for Fetterman.
The win is a pickup for the Democrats in the chamber as Fetterman unseated retiring Republican Senator Pat Toomey.
