McConnell ordered that the payments be made by Friday, giving the administration less than 24 hours to comply with the ruling.
"Last weekend, SNAP benefits lapsed for the first time in our nation’s history. This is a problem that could have and should have been avoided," McConnell said. He added that the government "knew there would be a long delay in paying [partial] SNAP benefits and failed to consider the harms individuals who rely on those benefits would suffer."
McConnell ordered that the payments be made by Friday, giving the administration less than 24 hours to comply with the ruling. 42 million recipients are set to go without benefits if the Senate does not come to an agreement and reopen the government by signing a continuing budget resolution.
The White House had agreed to deliver the funds from the emergency savings account, but it's still not enough money to fully cover it. This means that accounting would have to be done to decide who gets what.
McConnell also complained about President Trump's posts on Truth Social, saying that Trump had "stated his intent to defy the court order."
"SNAP BENEFITS," Trump had posted, "which increased by Billions and Billions of Dollars (MANY FOLD!) during Crooked Joe Biden’s disastrous term in office (Due to the fact that they were haphazardly ‘handed’ to anyone for the asking, as opposed to just those in need, which is the purpose of SNAP!), will be given only when the Radical Left Democrats open up government, which they can easily do, and not before!"
