Noem was confirmed on Saturday morning with a vote of 59 to 34 in the Senate.
Prior to her confirmation, Noem vowed to shut down the CBP One app, which occurred earlier this week prior to her confirmation vote. She was questioned by senators in the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.
Noem said at the time that after the CBP One is shut down, the government will use the data from the application in order to know who is in the country.
Thereās "data and information in there that we will preserve so that we can ensure we know whoās coming into this country and whoās already here that we need to go find, but also make sure that ā thereās another program, CHNV, which Iām sure youāre very familiar with, where our federal government actually paid to fly people into this country directly from other countries without any vetting or knowing who they are,ā Noem said at the time.
Trump said when he announced her nomination, "I am pleased to announce that the Governor and former Congresswoman from South Dakota, Kristi Noem, will be appointed to serve as the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).ā
Noem will take the place of the outgoing Biden administrationās DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Immigration over the last four years has become one of the top issues for many voters and a key platform issue that landed Trump back in the White House. He as well as other officials in his administration have promised to crack down on illegal immigration and deport those who have crossed the border illegally, starting with violent criminals.
