"Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort."
Legendary actor Robert Duvall, known for roles in movies such as The Godfather film series, Apocalypse Now, and To Kill a Mockingbird, has died at the age of 95.
His wife, Luciana, announced on Monday, "Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort."
She added, "To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything. His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court. For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented. In doing so, he leaves something lasting and unforgettable to us all. Thank you for the years of support you showed Bob and for giving us this time and privacy to celebrate the memories he leaves behind."
Duvall had been nominated for seven Oscar awards over the course of his career, winning one in 1984 for his role in Tender Mercies. He also won one BAFTA, two Emmys, four Golden Globes, and one Screen Actors Gild Awards.
Duvall, born on January 5, 1931, served two years in the Army during the Korean War. Upon his return, he studied drama and appeared in numerous Broadway and off-Broadway plays, as well as made guest TV appearances, before making his film debut at the age of 31 with his role in To Kill a Mockingbird in 1962.
Duvall’s role as Corleone family attorney Tom Hagen in The Godfather brought his first Oscar nomination, a role that was expanded upon in The Godfather Part II. He said in 2010, "It always comes back to ‘The Godfather.’ The first ones are two of the best films ever made. About a quarter of the way into it, we knew we had something special."
